Name: Carter Adams

Company: Luaka Bop

Title: Label Manager

Based in: New York, NY

Can you tell us a bit about the company’s history and its roster? Luaka Bop is a world music-oriented record label established by musician and record producer David Byrne, former lead singer and guitarist for the art rock–new wave band Talking Heads. Originally established in 1988, we’re celebrating our 30th anniversary this year. Over the years, we’ve put out records by artists such as Os Mutantes, Cornershop, Tim Maia, Floating Points, William Onyeabor and Alice Coltrane.

– and a bit about the acts you personally work with at this moment? At the moment, we are getting up for three releases this fall: “The Time for Peace Is Now,” a collection of gospel tracks; Pastor Champion, a gospel blues musician and pastor from the Bay Area, and a nice young Danish jazz duo who I can’t officially name yet, but who will be performing at Spot =)

What was the moment you decided you wanted to work with music? Probably in college, when I was initially promoting shows, and realized that I loved seeing a concert come together from idea and booking to load out and the afterparty.

What are your favourite Danish acts? I’ve been fortunate to work with some amazing Danish acts in my career, such as WhoMadeWho, Choir of Young Believers and When Saints Go Machine. I’m really looking forward to seeing Bremer/McCoy, Lisa and Efterklang this year.

Best show you’ve ever seen hands down? That changes all the time, but since Coachella season just ended, I am always reminded of seeing Snoop and Dre together doing The Chronic there.
