Name: Briana Cheng

Company: b4/ 4AD

Title: Founder of b4 and A&R at 4AD

Based in: New York

Can you tell us a bit about the company’s history and its roster? b4 is a new sister label to 4AD that serves as a home for tomorrow’s most relevant artist. The music on b4 is a reflection of the genre-smashing landscape, where prior categories no longer apply. We launched in 2018 and since then, we’ve put out singles from HAWA, EVA, BC Kingdom, Velvet Negroni, Andrea Valle, Skinny Malone, Jelani Aryeh, Cubby, and more to announce this year.

– and a bit about the acts you personally work with at this moment? I work closely with all of acts on b4 as I’m responsible for all the signees but right now, we’re really excited for Andrea Valle’s next R&B bop, HAWA’s graduation release, Cubby’s weirdo pop banger with Madge, and Gemma Dunleavy’s soulful electronic summer ballad. On the 4AD side, I personally work with Velvet Negroni whose debut album will be out this summer.

What was the moment you decided you wanted to work with music? Looking at my response from the first time and it’s definitely still the same, when I started a Tumblr dedicated to sharing new music discoveries back in 2006.

Which acts are you looking forward to seeing this year at SPOT? I’m really excited to see Erika de Casier and always School of X.

Best show you’ve ever seen hands down? Definitely still Future Islands at Webster Hall! What a small world, I’m working at their label now.
